To launch – or not to launch. Futile question, really. As fairly simple people (apart from an exception or two whom I am NOT going to mention now) we’re not really into the pondering of deep questions. If we can launch we will. Belgium was on our list of immensely cuddleable launchable countries for a while and has now made it to top position.
I can just hear all you Italians, Austrians and French crying out „Why them? Why not us?“ Well, there IS Belgium’s great beer and chocolate – which according to some very smart sources, which we all agree with over here but I can’t disclose, women actually need. Additionally, we also happen to have a great start lineup for you gals and guys over there. There’s VIJFtv and VT4 for the Flemish and La Une and La Deux for the French-speaking part. Add to that an ecletic mix of international news and entertainment channels for global minds, the homesick, and foreign language crammers – Al Jazeera English, Deutsche Welle, France 24 English, Luxe TV, SF info, Sumo TV, The Poker Channel, and TVP Polonia – and you’ve got Smörebröd a nice mix of online info-tainment to get you hooked going. Download now!
Zattoo – We care. For Belgians and other sorts of people.
September 26, 2007 at 4:20 pm
Thanks You Very Much for the Belgian Line up 😉
But One Error are in the Picture , You have placed VTV4, the international channel from the Vietnam and not VT4, the Flemish channel 😉
And i repeat , Thanks You ! 😀
September 26, 2007 at 4:39 pm
Oops, thanks for the hint. Those complicated channel names, they all sound the same … 😉
September 26, 2007 at 5:10 pm
AUSTRIA!!! AUSTRIA!!!
September 26, 2007 at 5:15 pm
There aren’t too complicated there are just a V added in VTV4 thant VT4… 😉
Soo , Are they new channels scheluded ? 😀
September 26, 2007 at 5:24 pm
Working on it as we write … ;-). No, seriously, we always try to get more content, because we think the more the better. You’ll see. Just keep on watching!
September 26, 2007 at 5:26 pm
Ok , Thanks anyway 😀
September 26, 2007 at 6:04 pm
Thanks you so much! I’ll give some beers whenever you are in my country 😉
A happy Belgian user
September 26, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Just mail me your address and you’ll get some chocolate 😉
September 27, 2007 at 8:14 am
@Lionel: Helen Schoch, Zattoo Europe AG, Elias-Canetti-Strasse 7, 8050 Zurich, Switzerland. 😉
September 27, 2007 at 12:29 pm
As it happened, I was attending a conference in Belgium yesterday, so I could try this on the conference WLAN and impress my neighbor (after the conference was over, of course :-). Quality was absolutely perfect.
September 27, 2007 at 6:59 pm
@Helen : Give me 4-5 days to buy chocolate, stamps,… 😉
September 27, 2007 at 7:41 pm
I just discovered and tried zattoo in Belgium today, and then saw it was launched very recently. That’s luck, I had no time to wait 🙂
I had no sound for la premiere, and a lot of frame skipped for la deux.
Do you have to get an agreement with each channel you stream? French channels are generally available here in Belgium, and it’s a pitty to not have them in your line-up. Channels like TF1? France2, France3, or TV5 Europe.
Looking forward to those channels being available.
In the end I still am waiting for something 😉
Raph
September 27, 2007 at 11:54 pm
@rb : I really hope those channels will be available too ! For LaUne, try to adjust the OS or speakers volume. Here it works with high volume.
September 28, 2007 at 8:09 am
@Lionel: ok, I will have to console myself with Swiss chocolate in the meantime … 😉
@Lionel and rb: yes, we have to get the rights for the channels for each single country. But we’re working on getting you more channels all the time, so the current Belgian lineup is not the final one. Cheers from Zurich!
September 28, 2007 at 5:24 pm
I am i belgian girl living in swiss for a few months, can i get the belgian channels too? I would be SO thankfull
greets from Lugano
September 28, 2007 at 8:22 pm
AUSTRIA!!!!
OK, I have to admit we don’t have Belgian beer or chocolate, but we do have Mozartkugeln AND we will let you win UEFA EURO 2008 (well, if we get far enough…) 😉
C’mon we don’t have *that* many TV channels over here. Just give us ORF, ATV and Al Jazeera and we’re happy…
September 29, 2007 at 5:05 pm
Yah AUSTRIA 😉 It’s nice that zattoo spreads that fast all over Europe but can’t Austria be the next one 🙂
I personally don’t need Al Jazeera lol but even anything would be great so far 😉
September 30, 2007 at 11:19 am
[…] Comment cela se fait-il ??? Tout simplement à cause de cette phrase écrite par la responsable du blog Zattoo: “ I can just hear all you Italians, Austrians and French crying out „Why them? Why not […]
September 30, 2007 at 10:30 pm
Just tried it and works verry nice. Now all we need to have is unlimeted bandwith and we can watch tv all day long.
October 1, 2007 at 11:27 am
Yeah, great for Belgium.
But no seriously, there is a bunch of us waiting for you to Launch Zattoo in Austria. Give us the good news soon, please – I’m already becoming a maniac from checking your blog 10 times a day!
October 1, 2007 at 7:42 pm
Well, there are a bunch of fabulous Austrian beers and we have wine too 😉
Please come to Austria!
October 1, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Ok. If you need culinary reasons for launching Zattoo in France, shall I remind you that we are the world’s main wine exporter, that there are about 400 different types of cheeses made in France and that French cuisine is renowned the world round… Seriously, those are not valid arguments 😉 Anyway, our chefs, cooks and butlers are waiting for Zattoo to show up in Proust’s nation… By the way, on Oct 1, 1977, French TV switched from black and white to colours; I had personally entertained the belief that you’d set the anniversary date for launch. I was mistaken… 🙂
October 1, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Sorry, it was 1967 not 1977… oops… never mind ;(
October 1, 2007 at 10:07 pm
That is a virtual box of chocolates and loads of virtual beers for you guys! Thanks!
October 2, 2007 at 9:17 am
@ all Austrians: how can we resist? Fabulous Austrian wines, Mozart Kugeln, letting us win the EURO 08, and you even have beer … You’ve been moved to the top of the launch list.
But then there’s France, with all its cheeses, wines and wonderful cooking (SERIOUSLY valid arguments, Nicolas) – aaaahhh, what do we do? You’ve been moved to the top as well.
Jokes aside, you both are at the top of our launch list anyway, because we’re close to getting a good starting lineup together for both countries. Which is all that counts, right? (Apart from beer and chocolate …)
October 2, 2007 at 11:47 am
Hi,
i work for a belgian television facilities company (videohouse), and i must say i’m impressed by this little media player. The quality is great, it doesn’t use a lot of bandwidth, and it’s really easy to use. Good job and i’m waiting for more (belgian) channels to come…

October 3, 2007 at 4:09 am
When can we expect you in the US. As a European living here I cant wait to get my hands on Zattoo.
October 3, 2007 at 8:30 am
@vwsteven: as we receive the rights to carry channels by country and not internationally, you will see another lineup in Switzerland than in Belgium. Which means that when you download the player in Switzerland you will see the Swiss lineup. If you download it in Belgium, you’ll see the Belgian one. But we continue to work on getting more channels for every country lineup, so stay with us!
October 3, 2007 at 4:40 pm
By the way…could we get a Zattoo forum? We could help eachother out, and thereby take of a load of your sholders support wise. Would be great!
Cheers
October 3, 2007 at 7:29 pm
It would be great to add french channels (TF1, France 2, France 3,…) to the belgian version. If possible… Or maybe I could get the swiss version ? 🙂

October 4, 2007 at 2:38 am
I’ve read that we can only see channels from our country…why ?
I am desesperatly trying to find a way to view ” LA SEXTA” by internet.
Is there any chance that someday Zatoo will allow users to see all the channels offered on Zatoo without restricting them because they are in an other country ?
thanks !

Please add French (e.g. TF1, France 2,3,4,5 and M6) and British Channels (BBC-Channels) into the german list. Furthermore I miss american und canadian channel. Now, I can watch ABC NEWS NOW but it would be great to receive CBC NEWSWORLD (Canadian Newschannel).
I’d pay for this service, of course. 😀
October 4, 2007 at 1:50 pm
@Madsen: we agree totally with you, and one of us is working on a solution for this.
@all others with channel requests: It’s good to know which channels you’re interested in. We certainly continue to burn lots of shoe and phone rubber getting you more. Just take a look at the happy Swiss: first they had four channels, now they’ve got 56.
October 5, 2007 at 1:19 am

I tried Zattoo player on GNU/Linux and it works pretty very well.
I have multiple questions :
– Where are the LGPL packages used in Zattoo available for download including the patches to the LGPL packages ?
– Is it possible to play the stream using a free software package like vlc or mplayer ?
– I saw that Arte is listed in the configuration but not available. What’s the reason behind ? is it legal or just a technical ? Arte is really a great channel…
Thanks a lot,

Dear Zattoo team,
I am a Swiss living in Belgium and am a big fan of Zattoo because it gives expats like me the possibility to keep in touch with the home land. For now you offer SF info in Belgium and I understand that the list of channel is bound to contracts with the tv stations. I just wonder why it is not possible to offer all available channels to all regions instead of make a selection for each country. Since the channels gave their permission to show their programs through Zattoo I guess it would be easier, if the users can make her/his own list of favourites and chose from the whole list? Like that I could chose for example all the Swiss channels in order to get as much information from home as possible. Please don’t get me wrong, I find your project great, but maybe this could be a way to make it even better and user focussed.
Thanks for your feedback and for bringing Zattoo to Belgium and good luck for your future projects.
Grüessli vo Belgie nach Züri,
Ruscalto

Hi Zattoo team (and users)
Because you said you are interested in channel requests: adding the other Flemmisch channel to the Belgian version would be very nice! Here are some Flemmisch channels:
channels: één, canvas/ketnet
owner: VRT (www.vrt.be)
channels: VTM, Kanaal 2, JimTV
owner: Vlaamse Media Maatschappij (www.vmma.be)
Other Flemmisch channels we have on our TV are: TMF (a music channel) and Kanaal Z.
National Geographic or Discovery Channel would also be very nice!! 😉
Many many thanks for your great program! It runs great on both Windows and Linux!
October 8, 2007 at 4:48 pm

@adulau, de reviere, berti bretholz and everybody else with technical or support questions: send them directly to support.be@zattoo.com. Believe me, you don’t want me answering any technical questions … 😉
@seppe: thanks for taking the trouble to put a list together! It’s been sent on to our content acquisition folks.
October 9, 2007 at 9:07 pm
Hello,
I live in Switzerland and I would like to see the Belgian channel (la Une, la Deux…). The problem is that when I load the application it looks like I have some Swiss, French channels… but not the Belgian one’s… would it possible to add La Une and La Deux to the list ???

October 10, 2007 at 3:20 pm
@ruscalto: I had to ask my buddy Francesco, former blogger and king of content, about this. So here’s why it’s not possible to offer a channel in several different countries all at once: the fact is that channels themselves do not have the right to show content outside of their own country. They buy the content from the content providers (all the big studios etc.), but they only buy the permission to show it in their specific language and on their territory. So a German TV channel will buy the rights for “Mission Impossible”, say, but only get the rights to show it in German and in Germany.
So while broadcasting rights are still so territorial we’ll just have to continue to fine-tune our negotiation skills to serve the broader public (you) …
October 10, 2007 at 6:22 pm
I really can not wait to get some Flemisch ( Belgium ) Channels on Zattoo.
Because with my Sat its impossible to get them, need a special card to receive them. The thing is that I’m even not so far away from Belgium, I’m just across the boarder in Germany, but here they don’t give channels from Belgium. ;(
We in Belgium give channels for different countries even germany, but if you guys giving some Belgium channels here then I will use Zattoo more then before. Because then it’s getting more interesting for me to watch on Zattoo
October 10, 2007 at 6:39 pm
When will channels like Vitaya, VRT and so on be available, since I have zattoo, I have to say I rarely switch on the TV anymore, unless it’s something on those other channels.
October 11, 2007 at 10:57 am
next italy pls!
October 11, 2007 at 2:29 pm
Hello All,
When all those channels are going to be available in Italy. I’m swiss and from March last year I leave in Italy and I would like to be informed on what’s going on in my country…PLEASE !!!!
Thanks
October 11, 2007 at 9:14 pm
austria, austria, austria! just for reminding you 😉
October 11, 2007 at 10:12 pm
What about Austria?
October 12, 2007 at 1:34 am
why cant you provide all free channels that exist both on internet and on satellite that you have in your channel list to all countries? For example TVE, Canal24 horas, Eurosport, MTV, RTL and RAI channels all are free on satellite and I dont believe they only have rights in their own country because they are free channels and lots of countries can already watch those channels. Is it a server/cost issue or some other strange international laws on internet you obey different than satellite laws? Greetings from nonZattoo land Sweden 😦 and congrats Belgium 🙂

October 13, 2007 at 12:57 pm
Grazie Ale, bè la sepranza è l’ultima a morire quindi continuo a sperarci.
Magari l’anno prossimo o quello dopo o dopo ancora (tra 50 anni xò sarò morto)…… .
UFFA! 😦
October 13, 2007 at 1:55 pm
eh lo so,anche perchè qui ci sono i canali per i quali noi paghiamo tanto di canone! comunque un sito molto buono per me che ho esignza di vedere canali spagnoli è canalbrava non so che canali vuoi vedere tu,però.Sempre in attesa di zattoo………….
October 14, 2007 at 1:21 am
For belgium you have a plenty of choices. Due to our three national languages, everyone here can view Ard, ZDF, and channels from Holland. Surprise us 🙂
October 14, 2007 at 6:31 am
October 14, 2007 at 2:09 pm
La une / la deux is allrite , Al jazeera is really nice cause u can’t get it with classic tv . France 24 english (but why not french lol? ) is good as well .

October 20, 2007 at 6:35 pm
European channels should be watched all over Europe. NO FRONTIERS.
Los canales de Europa deberian verse en cualquier lugar de Europa. Sin importar el pais donde estés. NO A lAS FRONTERAS.
October 20, 2007 at 6:43 pm
Digo lo mismo
De que sirve en Bélgica ver los canales belgas y algunos otros que no tienen ningun interes?
Joder, poner publicidad y sufragar los derechos de emision para que podamos ver los canales españoles, italianos, franceses, etc
October 21, 2007 at 2:34 pm
When can i expect the Dutch (Netherlands) version. I can’t wait………
October 21, 2007 at 6:48 pm
Ha ragine vincent: la tv europea deve poter essere vista in tutta europa senza frontiere!
October 22, 2007 at 6:38 pm
Please, add Italy in the lineup.
October 23, 2007 at 11:40 am
Cheap & stilysh subnotebook + Zattoo would fit like Beer + Chips red & white…
In a few weeks the lowpriced subnotebook “Asus Eee Pc” will be available. It runs Xandros, which is based on Debian. With 900 Mhz (clocked down to 600/700) and 256-1024 MB Ram (depends on model) it is really on the lowest level for running Zattoo. Could You check the compatibility or talk to Asus for an implementation?
Germans love TV and Notebooks. Even saving money would be great!
October 24, 2007 at 8:10 pm
would it be possible to add arte (french) for belgium! Would be very appreciated !
Best Regards.
October 27, 2007 at 9:54 am

Portugal! Please, Portugal channels!!!
October 28, 2007 at 9:12 pm
I’m having loads of problem tuning to La une and La deux for the moment.
It is said bad or no signal ? What seems to be the trouble ?
October 28, 2007 at 10:00 pm
Same here. Connection problems with LA UNE et LA DEUX only.
October 28, 2007 at 10:40 pm
@herrmutt and Lionel: the good news is that it’s not you. We are in fact experiencing connection problems because the signal encoding has been changed. Our technician is flying over there this week, and La Une and La Deux should be up and running again by mid next week.
October 29, 2007 at 12:19 am
@Helen : Thanks a lot to your team !
October 29, 2007 at 11:53 am
E’ assurdo! Ci sono ben 8 canali italiani ma noi non abbiamo ancora la possibilità di accedere al servizio….allora toglieteli!
October 29, 2007 at 12:49 pm
Has anyone checked out the Poker channel? What’s the content? Is it 24/7 or reruns from reruns rerunning?
October 30, 2007 at 5:52 pm
nice programm….when came AUSTRIA?
November 4, 2007 at 9:09 pm
Ok everything seems ok now ! Thanks !
Just one more request :
Will it be possible to add the arte channel ?
(I know for a fact that belgian shows are now programmed on arte + i have to say that a cultural channel will be much appreciated and i would definately tell all my friends and relatives about zattoo if that channel was available for belgian users ! 😉 )
November 8, 2007 at 1:54 am
Definitly, … Austria has the very best beer! Therefore, next is Austria, right!? 😉
November 11, 2007 at 5:28 pm
VT4 and VIJFtv! Nice! But I would like VTM, Eén and KANAALTWEE as well!
November 12, 2007 at 8:54 pm
What’s about belgian working in Egypt ? Is it possible to download with an egyptian IP ?
November 18, 2007 at 2:09 pm
@Attila: I don’t think so. VT4/VIJFtv usually makes agreements with content creators to broadcast their shows in Flanders. In other words: they’re not allowed to broadcast outside Flanders, unless they were to filter out all programs for which they don’t have sufficient rights. But then you’d only be able to watch home shopping programs and phone-in quizzes, so that wouldn’t even be worth it.
November 25, 2007 at 8:12 pm
CHEER!
Amazing software!
With my Laptop and my 3G card I can receive News from Belgium almost everywhere!
Do you plan the addition of RTL-TVI and/or TV5 to your channels?
November 29, 2007 at 5:12 pm
Oh man…… Like this A LOT
thx Zattoo!!
December 27, 2007 at 3:36 am
Austria, Austria!
We’ve been waiting for so long!
January 7, 2008 at 12:59 pm
I live in Gibraltar and miss RTBF (la une deux trois).
Can I download from here as well, because I read somewhere you restrict the service to Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, Germany, Norway, United Kingdom and Belgium? (Is this IP based via GeoIP or similar?)
January 9, 2008 at 12:01 pm
@pierre: good question. we’re looking into this and will let you know.
